Rising quietly in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is often underestimated by travelers—but for trekkers who take the time to climb it, Meru delivers one of the most rewarding mountain experiences in East Africa. At 4,566 meters, it is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and a dramatic volcanic giant located inside Arusha National Park.
Unlike the busier Kilimanjaro routes, Mount Meru offers a quieter, more intimate journey through diverse ecosystems, abundant wildlife, and breathtaking crater views. It is also the perfect acclimatization climb for those preparing to summit Kilimanjaro.
At an impressive height of 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located inside Arusha National Park, just about 70 km (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, Mount Meru remains one of Africa’s most underrated trekking peaks and proudly stands as the second-highest mountain in Tanzania.
Unlike the busier routes of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a more intimate and immersive mountain experience. The climb takes you through lush forests, open savannahs, dramatic crater walls, and alpine ridges—all within a protected wildlife ecosystem. It is one of the few mountains in Africa where trekking feels like a walking safari in the lower sections.
A typical Mount Meru climb takes 4 days, although experienced hikers sometimes complete it in 3 days. However, the 4-day itinerary is highly recommended because it allows better acclimatization, reduces fatigue, and significantly improves summit success rates.
On clear days, the views from Mount Meru are unforgettable. The distant silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro rises above the clouds, while the crater floor below reveals the raw volcanic history of the mountain. This combination of scenery, solitude, and wildlife makes Mount Meru one of the most scenic climbs in East Africa.

Real journeys, real moments — in the words of those who travelled with us.
From the first email to the final farewell, Sirmella Tanzania Adventures handled every detail flawlessly. What stayed with us most was learning how much they invest back into the local communities — knowing our trip helped support nearby villages made the whole experience feel truly meaningful.
We added a local community services visit alongside our safari, and it became the highlight of the whole trip. Sirmella Tanzania Adventures arranged time at a village school and a women's craft cooperative — respectful, genuine, and beautifully organised. This is a company that gives back, and you feel it in everything they do.
Our guide's knowledge was extraordinary — he read the bush like a book and found leopards where no one else could. The whole team was warm, patient and endlessly professional, turning what we expected to be a holiday into a real education. We can't recommend these guides highly enough.
The team's deep ties to the local communities made all the difference. They introduced us to Maasai families, translated stories around the evening fire, and arranged a community visit that none of us will ever forget. You can tell this team belongs to this land and truly cares about the people in it.
