Success Rate, Difficulty & Experience Comparison
Choosing the right Kilimanjaro route is the single biggest factor influencing your summit success, comfort, and overall experience. While all routes lead to Uhuru Peak, they differ significantly in acclimatization, difficulty, and success rates.
| Factor | Lemosho Route | Machame Route | Marangu Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Success Rate | 90–95% (8–9 days) | 75–90% | 50–75% |
| Difficulty Level | Moderate to Challenging | Moderate to Challenging (steeper) | Moderate (but deceptive) |
| Acclimatization | Excellent (best profile) | Very good | Poor (fast ascent) |
| Duration | 7–9 days | 6–7 days | 5–6 days |
| Accommodation | Camping | Camping | Mountain huts |
| Scenery | Outstanding, varied | Very scenic | Limited (same route up/down) |
| Crowds | Low to moderate | High (most popular) | High (tourist route) |
Widely considered the gold standard. Highest success rates due to longer duration and excellent acclimatization using “climb high, sleep low”. Starts on a quieter western approach with outstanding scenery.
Best for: First-time climbers serious about summiting and photographers.
Known as the “Whiskey Route”, it offers strong success rates, excellent scenery, and good acclimatization. Includes the famous Barranco Wall. Steeper sections make it more physically demanding than Lemosho.
Best for: Fit travelers wanting a classic Kilimanjaro experience.
The only route with hut accommodation (often called the “Coca-Cola Route”). Simpler logistics but poor acclimatization due to short duration and same path up and down.
Best for: Travelers who strongly prefer huts over tents (not recommended for most).
Many assume an “easier” route means higher success. In reality, longer and slower routes perform much better because altitude — not steepness — is the biggest challenge.
Lemosho
Highest success
Machame
Strong balance
Marangu
Lowest success
Your priority is reaching the summit, you want the best acclimatization, and you prefer a quieter, more scenic route.
You want a good balance of challenge and success, you are reasonably fit, and you don’t mind busier trails.
You strongly prefer hut accommodation and accept a lower summit success rate (generally not recommended).
If you strip away marketing and look at real mountain outcomes, the conclusion is clear: Lemosho maximizes your chances of success, Machame offers a strong balance of challenge and reward, and Marangu prioritizes comfort but compromises acclimatization. The biggest mistake climbers make is choosing a route based on duration or comfort rather than acclimatization. On Kilimanjaro, success is not about speed — it’s about how well your body adapts to altitude.

Real journeys, real moments — in the words of those who travelled with us.
From the first email to the final farewell, Sirmella Tanzania Adventures handled every detail flawlessly. What stayed with us most was learning how much they invest back into the local communities — knowing our trip helped support nearby villages made the whole experience feel truly meaningful.
We added a local community services visit alongside our safari, and it became the highlight of the whole trip. Sirmella Tanzania Adventures arranged time at a village school and a women's craft cooperative — respectful, genuine, and beautifully organised. This is a company that gives back, and you feel it in everything they do.
Our guide's knowledge was extraordinary — he read the bush like a book and found leopards where no one else could. The whole team was warm, patient and endlessly professional, turning what we expected to be a holiday into a real education. We can't recommend these guides highly enough.
The team's deep ties to the local communities made all the difference. They introduced us to Maasai families, translated stories around the evening fire, and arranged a community visit that none of us will ever forget. You can tell this team belongs to this land and truly cares about the people in it.
