Tarangire National Park is celebrated for its majestic baobab trees, whose enormous, bottle-shaped trunks rise like ancient sculptures across the landscape, some measuring over 20 metres in circumference.
This spectacular gathering of giants against a backdrop of towering baobabs creates one of Africa’s most iconic safari scenes.
Tarangire National Park is widely regarded by safari connoisseurs as Tanzania’s best-kept secret. Established in 1970, it expanded its original boundaries to protect a much larger portion of the greater Tarangire ecosystem. At 2,850 km² (1,100 mi²), it ranks as Tanzania’s sixth-largest national park — roughly the size of Rhode Island in the USA or Luxembourg in the EU.
The park takes its name from the Tarangire River, which flows from south to north through the heart of the reserve. The name “Tarangire” is said to mean “winding river of warthogs,” and while these comical characters are indeed plentiful, the park offers far more than just one species.
The park’s iconic baobab trees — those giant, upside-down “trees of life” — rise like ancient sculptures across the savannah.
Some are so enormous you can walk inside the famous “Poacher’s Hide” baobab. Their bottle-shaped trunks and gnarled branches dominate the skyline, especially striking at sunrise or sunset.
Beyond elephants and baobabs, Tarangire offers superb game viewing with far fewer crowds than Serengeti or Ngorongoro. During the dry season, the river draws a “mini-migration” of up to 250,000 animals, including zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, impalas, and warthogs. Predators follow: lions, leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas are regularly spotted, with occasional sightings of the rare African wild dog.
Bird lovers rejoice here — over 550 species have been recorded, more than in the Serengeti. The park is also home to special dry-country antelopes rarely seen elsewhere on the northern circuit: the elegant fringe-eared oryx, long-necked gerenuk, Coke’s hartebeest, and dik-dik.
Just outside the park, ancient rock paintings in the Kolo district add a fascinating cultural layer to your visit.
Because it receives far fewer visitors, Tarangire feels wild and intimate. Game drives are peaceful, sightings are shared with just a handful of vehicles, and the sense of raw wilderness is profound. Whether you’re watching a herd of elephants cross the river at golden hour or admiring a lone baobab silhouetted against the sky, Tarangire delivers an authentic, unforgettable safari experience that perfectly complements any Tanzania itinerary.
Tarangire delivers an unforgettable, crowd-free safari experience that perfectly complements any northern Tanzania itinerary.
